Anos 50

For new challenges, a new activity:
The Soil and Foundations Consultancy.

Consultrix's history is intertwined with Brazilian Engineering. It was 60 years ago, when Sigmundo Golombek opened his first office dedicated exclusively in the area of Soils and Foundations Consulting, when Brazil was still in its infancy in terms of engineering.

After graduating from the São Paulo Polytechnic University (USP) in the 1940’s, Sigmundo Golombek immediately began working with Soil Mechanics and teaching at the Mackenzie Architecture College, where he was Professor of Soil Mechanics for 19 years.

In the early 1950’s, Sigmundo Golombek noticed the absence of consulting firms specializing in the field, a trend which was already growing in the United States and Europe. He therefore created Brazil’s first Foundations Consulting office, beginning his solo career.

The 1950’s were marked by the beginning high-rise building construction on the main avenue “Avenida Paulista” in central Sao Paulo, due to industrialization and economic development of the city.

Sigmundo Golombek participated as a foundations consultant for city landmarks, which included projects such as the Conjunto Nacional and Edifício Itália - until today, the tallest building in Brazil; one of the most controversial works of art at the time, (MASP) the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - the Lina Bo Bardi project with the largest free span in the world. The big challenge was having this amazing sculpture open to the sky. The know-how of Golombek was crucial to the success of this venture which, until today, is one of the postcard photos of the city.
